What Is AEO? Here's What Our Scanner Found Across 500 Sites

July 14, 20266 min read

If you've been working in marketing for a while, you probably know the SEO playbook inside and out. Find a keyword, write a 2,000-word blog post, build some backlinks, and wait for Google to reward you. But what happens when the very concept of a "search engine" evolves into something that doesn't just search, but actually thinks and answers? Enter Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).

The Shift from Searching to Asking

Think about the last time you used ChatGPT or Perplexity. Did you type in a fragmented string of keywords like "best CRM software small business 2026"? Probably not. You likely asked a full, conversational question: "What is the best CRM software for a small consulting business that integrates well with Google Workspace?"

This shift in user behavior is the foundation of AEO. People are no longer looking for a list of ten blue links to browse through. They are looking for a direct, synthesized answer. Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content so that these AI models (the "Answer Engines") can easily find, understand, and extract your information to provide that direct answer.

Igris Radar Data: The AEO Readiness Gap

We ran 500 B2B SaaS landing pages through the Igris Radar AEO scanner to see how prepared the industry is for AI search. The results were concerning:

  • Failed to provide an `llms.txt` file94%
  • Blocked `PerplexityBot` via WAF or robots.txt31%
  • Lacked concise, answer-shaped definition blocks78%
  • Relied heavily on un-parseable client-side JS42%

How is AEO different from SEO?

While they share the same ultimate goal of getting your brand in front of eyeballs, they require entirely different technical approaches:

  • The Target Audience: SEO targets search engine algorithms (like Googlebot) that rank pages based on relevance and authority. AEO targets Large Language Models (LLMs) that need to extract factual snippets.
  • The Output: SEO wins you a high-ranking link on a results page. AEO wins you inclusion in a generated paragraph, usually accompanied by a footnote citation.
  • The Content Structure: SEO often rewards long-form, comprehensive guides that keep users on the page. AEO rewards extreme conciseness, structured data, and easily digestible Q&A formats.

3 Steps to Start Optimizing for Answer Engines

If you want to start showing up in AI-generated answers, you need to change how you write and format your content. Here is the beginner's playbook.

1. Write "Answer-Shaped" Content

LLMs are basically incredibly advanced text parsers. They love structure. Instead of writing long, winding paragraphs, break your content down into direct questions and answers. Use H2 and H3 tags to ask the exact questions your users are asking, and immediately follow those headings with a clear, definitive 40-to-60 word answer.

Don't bury the lead. Give the AI the exact snippet it needs right up front, and save the detailed explanation for later in the article.

2. Feed the Machine with llms.txt

Just like robots.txt tells crawlers what they can and cannot do, an llms.txt file is a relatively new standard that provides a clean, markdown-formatted summary of your site specifically designed for LLMs. By providing this file, you are essentially rolling out the red carpet for AI agents, giving them a perfectly formatted cheat sheet of your site's most important information.

3. Increase Your Factual Density

AI models are trained to prioritize facts and verifiable data over opinions and fluff. If your article is full of vague statements, an answer engine will likely ignore it. Support your claims with statistics, cite authoritative sources, and use semantic HTML tables for any comparisons or data sets. The more factual density your page has, the more likely it is to be extracted and cited as a trustworthy source.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to throw away your SEO strategy, but you do need to evolve it. By incorporating AEO principles into your content creation process, you ensure that your brand remains visible not just on traditional search engine results pages, but inside the AI interfaces where a growing number of your customers are already spending their time.
